How to store flowers properly: 5 rules
Light, air, heat and moisture cost aroma. Here's how to keep your flowers as good as on day one for weeks.
· Hanf Pate, Dresden
Aroma is volatile. The terpenes that define a flower fade within a few weeks in light and heat – and with them the character of the strain. That's why good storage is not a detail, but the difference between a good flower and a disappointing one.
1. Dark
An opaque or tinted jar protects better than any bag.
2. Airtight
Every exchange of air dries it out.
3. Cool, but not cold
Room temperature in a cupboard is ideal; the fridge creates condensation.
4. Keep the humidity
Between 55 and 62 percent relative humidity, the flower stays springy without going mouldy. Small humidity packs in the jar take care of this reliably.
5. Don't open it all the time
If you dip into your storage jar every day, fill a small daily container. And: only grind shortly before use – ground material has many times the surface area and loses aroma correspondingly faster.
